The Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, and Felix Nartey, the Chairman of the Open Foundation West Africa, finalized plans and signed an agreement Yesterday, Friday 7th August 2020, to set the NFA Wikiproject in action
The Open Foundation West Africa is affiliated to Wikimedia, the company behind ‘Wikipedia’.
The NFA Wikiproject is intended to profile various prominent filmmakers and projects within the Ghana film ecosystem and make such information available and accessible to all through Wikipedia and the NFA website.
Felix Nartey, described the signing as monumental. ‘… It is good for Ghana’s projection on the internet and ice can’t wait to start rolling out faces of this project to ensure that Ghana’s visibility is pushed on the platform’ he said at the signing.
Wikipedia is a multilingual online encyclopedia created and maintained as an open collaboration project by a community of volunteer editors using a wiki-based editing system to profile prominent people, places, events etc and provides ready and useful information on them accessible to all. It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web. It is also one of the 15 most popular websites as of August 2020. It features exclusively free content to add to the body of knowledge on recognized subjects.
Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante expressed her excitement for the project. ‘This is critical because, it is part of our strategy to highlight and bring to light the film sector and its players, their stories and our narratives.’ she said.
The idea is to aggregate as many profiles as possible for the industry. The project is strategic to the Authority’s objective to develop, enhance and uplift the face of the industry.
The online launch of the project will be held on Wednesday, 9th September 2020.
